Don’t Make Reading Your Only Study boring.
To read more and more topics daily is a good thing. To be a good reader is fantastic. But just reading an article is not enough to get success in IELTS general reading test. The Reading section is designed specially to check the ability to identify important information regarding reading and understanding. So, you have to read it carefully. If you don’t read it carefully, you won’t be prepared for the Reading section completely.
You should make questions yourself, and this practice will help you a lot in your preparation. Think about your interest and search articles regarding that. Read that article and then think questions based on that paragraph. It will help you to prepare well for the IELTS general reading test.
Try to Learn New And Unfamiliar Words
When you read more new articles, try to make a habit of highlighting new and confusing words and phrases. Then understand them, learn them and their meaning too. It is not possible all the time that the same words will come in that general reading test, so try to understand their meaning too. It will help you understand a word that you don’t recognize during the live test.
Make a Habit to Read the Questions First
Before reading any paragraph in the Reading section, make sure to take a look at the questions first. Since these questions are directly related to that passage. So, knowing the questions beforehand will help you find which question and what things you have a lookout for when you read that passage.
And, if you don’t solve questions like that. You read the paragraph first. And after reading the passage, return to the questions and then re-read them to solve them all. It will waste your time also, as you have limited time to solve them. So, reading questions first will help you notice which sections of the passage you need to read carefully.
Remember, Spelling Counts
You have to learn and remember spelling also. If your answer is spelled incorrectly, then it will be marked wrong. There is strict marking for that. The good news is that you won’t lose points for wrong answers, which means there is no negative marking. So, if you are not sure about the spelling of that word, try to give your best reply. You may get it right.
Watch Out for Traps
As we told you earlier, the reading section is all about reading a text and knowing all the pieces of information required. And, if you follow our given steps and read the questions before reading the passage. You may find a word in the text you saw in any of the questions from that passage. And, that must be your answer.
The Reading section is to test your reading comprehension speed and your knowledge only, and how much you are paying attention. Some questions are given to confuse and mislead you into thinking that they might be the answers. Always make a habit of re-reading your answers to make sure that you are doing what the question is asking. Read carefully, and don’t fall into a trap.
Labelling Diagrams
During your Reading test, you may be asked to caption or label a diagram. And the good news is that you’ll find all the words you need in the text. Be sure to accurately copy the words you require.
Make a Habit to Highlight Important Information
The Reading section will ask you to do a lot of things in a short amount of time. And to do it easily in time, make a habit of highlighting and circling important words and sentences as you read them.
Divide Your Time Evenly Between Given Paragraphs
The Reading test will ask you to reply to the questions on three different passages. We suggest you for spending 20 minutes on each passage. It may not look like much time to write for a single passage but remember and you have just one hour to complete the Reading section.
By dividing your one-hour time evenly between all three passages, you’ll give yourself the best chance to get success. You just remember to keep an eye on the time, too, as you don’t want to end up with only 10 minutes to spend on the last passage. And you will get enough time to revise that too.
